The Proper Residences

We originally worked with these clients in 2014 on their family home remodel in Hyde Park. After the homeowners became true empty nesters, they decided to move downtown.

Our design team, the builder, and homeowners all reunited long before The Residence at The Proper was complete in order to start making their new residence feel like home.

The new smaller home with large windows overlooking Lady Bird Lake is limited in wall space. This was a challenge for the client’s evolving art collection so we all agreed that a screen wall in the living room would provide two new art hanging walls (front and back) as well as add privacy and define a small working space in the open floor plan.

In addition to art space, the clients wanted to be sure built-in storage was incorporated into the plans after the success of their built-in bookcases in their previous Hyde Park house. Our design plans identified several storage opportunities including shelving in the kitchen island (in place of counter stools), a living room entertainment wall, a library bookcase in the media room, and a Murphy style guest bed with floor to ceiling cabinets in the home office.

The style of the oak slat screen wall was repeated in the entry hall as a purse drop and coat hook. At the bottom of the built-in is a hinged lid to storage for umbrellas, gloves, and hats.

These features and practical storage solutions were a true team effort between the clients, the builder, cabinet maker, and our design team including Jessica Nash.

In this brand new building, adding wood was a clear choice for bringing in some architecture and warmth. A wood veneer wallpaper in the powder bathroom and a cork wallpaper behind the living room built-ins continued that element of natural textures.

The client’s appreciation of textiles led the way for bringing in several custom upholstery pieces that made the new space feel homey. Project Manager Allison Beyer carried out the transformations of a recovered family chaise lounge in the primary bedroom, personalized ottomans in the common areas, and custom wedge pillows in the Murphy bed for maximum comfort.
