We always love getting calls from clients who are ready to embrace bold design. This young family’s South Austin home had evolved over time, but the great room still felt unresolved with a large open space that didn’t reflect the energy and personality of the family living there. Our goal was to bring structure, function, and character to the space while creating clear areas for gathering, dining, entertaining, and daily life.
We started by reworking the facade and entry to create a stronger sense of arrival while also improving functionality for a busy family. Inside, we divided the open-plan layout into connected but defined zones, including a welcoming dining area, a comfortable living space, and a kitchen designed to be the center of activity.
The big challenge on this project was space planning and for us that was the biggest win in the end! From one room the family gained the function of five rooms. No exaggeration!
The kitchen became the focal point of the project. Dramatic Avocado Quartzite established the palette, which then carried through the space in layered color, texture, and custom details. Some of the most successful elements came from repurposing vintage pieces that the clients already owned. Her collection of inherited antique porcelain inspired a custom display cabinet that connects the kitchen and dining areas. The island pendants were created from lantern frames they had saved for years. The dining table was built around a family heirloom base, while the new tabletop was crafted by the client’s father, giving the piece both function and meaning.
The finished home feels colorful, functional, and personal. It is a true reflection of the family and the way they live, gather, and entertain.
