2nd & Nueces
This is AW&Co’s third project together with this couple. We’ve been collaborating since 2014. For this home, they decided to downsize from a three bedroom to a two bedroom in the same building, The Austin Proper Residences. And this time around they were open to more color, more florals, and curves!
Curves became essential for this smaller space. Each built-in has rounded corners that soften the urban contemporary space in downtown Austin.
The entry to the primary bedroom included unused square-footage. We used that area to create a vestibule with functional storage for linens, books, and a printer.
The entry foyer with three doorways was covered in white oak paneling, and helpful hooks were added to the space on all walls. This feature was inspired by our previous project. The clients knew this function worked well for them and wanted to recreate it in their new space. We took it even further this time by adding a custom Kyle Bunting rug on the floor. The homeowners were engaged in selecting the pattern and colors together.
A desk now wraps around the concrete post, delivering multi-function features: book storage and a compact work surface for laptop use; and a dedicated space to work in between the dining room and reading corner.
The living room built-in is highly customized for this space and for the client. Storage below was made to fit the collector’s trays. The TV screen niche is maximized for room to grow if they wish. A white oak unit levitates off the wall for a floating appearance which also allows the largest area rug to reach all the way beneath the built-in to capture every footstep entering from the hallway.
The powder room bathroom wallpaper extends past the walls and onto the ceiling. The pattern in this palette was the very first selection for this project. The range of color is true to what the clients are typically drawn to, except this time in an organic repeat.
Two important elements that make this client’s home extra special and reflective of their distinct individualism and personalities is the incredible curated art collection. We have learned through our years of working together how very important it is to them. The colors and textures of the art have been taken into account with each design and decorating decision.
A favorite moment in the space is the marriage of the Art Deco sconces we sourced to hold their own with the strong artwork in the space. It was a unique find that lends character and impact to the space without dominating.
Lastly, the full color curtains in the living room and bedroom bring next-level personalization and life to the home. They balance the upholstered furniture from all three of the homes we’ve worked on together.
